William Glasser is quoted as saying we learn 95 per cent of what we teach others should we all be teaching then?

[UPDATE: I wrote this back in May 2009 but am re-posting it again as it is relevant to the Influencers blog post I am writing]

Here is the full quote

“We Learn . . .

10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss
80% of what we experience
95% of what we teach others.”

William Glasser quote

Does that mean we should all be teaching others as a way of learning?

Maybe that is what bloggers are doing anyway because there are so many “How to make money online blogs” run by people that are not making money online.  Does that mean they are teaching others as a way of learning how to?

I remember John Chow saying something along the lines of him starting a blog to test what works and now he is a huge blogger. So tried stuff and blogged about it and I guess a lot of stuff must have worked for him because he’s doing okay now :)

Then we can move on to all the training being run around internet marketing in the UK – how effective are all these seminars? They are certainly great for networking and meeting other people but how much information do you retain? Only 10-20% according to William Glasser.

I love experiential learning – or learning by doing. It is how I learn the best and that is probably why I have no problems paying to be at a seminar because they allow time for note taking and bringing your laptop along compared to free seminars where you are sat in rows of chairs.

These stats are interesting for those of us who run training and I would even argue that the best internet marketing training out there are the ones which give you the opportunity to

  • see and hear (50%) – via video, audio and text
  • Discuss – in a forum, on teleseminars or at a meetup
  • Gives you the opportunity to teach what you know to ensure you really have learnt it

Plus of course you can use it yourself to actually take action and build your business. I have never come across any site where members are allowed to teach to ensure learning has taken place so I guess right there is how I go about making myself different!

I dont know if these figures are correct, but the idea behind it is good. When you teach other people, you understand it so well, that you can explain it. And what we read/see but don’t think about, we easily forget.
