Some background for you

31 Days to Build A Better Blog was created after Darren Rowse asked his Twitter following whether they had any interest in  a month of concentrated teaching and practical exercises on improving their blogs. Who would say no to that! Over 13,000 bloggers signed up and so the 31 days to build a better blog challenge was born!

But of course signing up and actually getting round to taking action and doing what is being taught are two different things and to bridge that gap Darren deciding to create the manual which will give bloggers an opportunity to follow along at their own pace.

Let’s be honest, knowing how to build a better blog so you end up being able to make money blogging isn’t easy and when it comes to learning about how to become a professional blogger knowing how to make money blogging is often a bloggers biggest goal but not everyone succeeds.

The reason why many don’t is because:

• They don’t truly understand what it takes to develop a successful blog (all that remote blogging, link building and blog post writing!)
• They immediately focus on wanting to make money with their blog in the short term rather than looking at other short term objectives which will provide more success.  Problogger covers what they are in his manual but as a hint it is all about setting your focus on IMPROVING your blogs performance!

From reading Darren’s manual it did strike me as a manual for people looking to become authority bloggers or at least build a decent content driven blog rather than set up RSS type blogs.

If you are ready to change your mindset  from “I need to make money” to “I want to improve my blog my doing X” then yes it will work for you. This isn’t a “how to make money blogging” manual it is more of a “if I do this on a consistent basis I will get results” manual!

Any Negatives?

Do you seriously want me to say something negative about The Godfather – I don’t want to find a horse head in my bed!

Okay, there is just one thing! The font is really small which makes it difficult to read and I had to increase it significantly then spend my time scrolling to read it. Doing my best to contribute to this paper-less society everyone keeps talking about I didn’t want to print it but I will have to because its a little difficult to read on the screen. Not that I would use that as an excuse to stop me taking action of course!

Running your own successful online business is something we can all achieve – if one person can then we all can! But one of the things that can hinder our success is how adverse to risk we are. Risk taking is such a powerful mindset stopper that it could stop people from ever getting further with their blog than writing a few blog posts!

All blogs are unique because they are written with a different voice. It is the only thing that makes us all different as bloggers, but is it enough? Obviously not otherwise we will all be as popular as Chris Brogan

So what else does it take to give your blog a soul? How much more do you have to do to help yourself stand out from the crowd?

1.  Understand why you do what you do

Too many bloggers are now looking at their desire to make money with their blog – absolutely nothing wrong with that – I do it too, but I don’t do it from a place of sacrificing content. My content is still important even when I am promoting a product. I want my blog to educate, entertain, inspire and keep people updated about what’s out there and what’s happening with me.  My blog has a soul because it contains a little bit of me, a little bit of information and alot of education.

2.  Take the time to vary what you say and how you say it

Repurposing content means you can say the same thing only differently. A blog post will be paragraphs of written words that can be turned into a shorter mindmap, or placed into powerpoint and made into a video, it can be recorded as an audio or used as a learning tool in a seminar. You can make life easier for yourself (especially if you are a multi blogger like me) and use the same content in different ways.

3.  Help your readers get things dones

This is the new way I want to inject soul into my blogs. Providing quality content is a must but I also want to help my readers go out there and take action.  On one of my blogs I showed readers how to “Make Your Own Information Products You Never Write” and outlined how to create an information product using articles.  More action orientated blog posts is my goal for 2010.

4. Have a little patience

What is the difference between someone you regard as a “master or authority” blogger and you? Only time. They have a few years on you. Your blog needs time to establish itself. It needs to attract people who will love it’s “soul energy” – sometimes it may attract people just looking to leave comments for their own gain but hey that’s okay it all helps

The world of blogging has turned from commenting because you want to and love to – to commenting for the purpose of traffic. Comments are now all about the link juice baby!  So the more time you give your blog and the bigger it grows the more chances people will begin to leave comments, so don’t panic too much about comments, just keep leaving quality and they will come!

5.  Allow your authentic voice to shine through

There is no point in starting a blog with a message you don’t believe in or have no connection to purely because you hope it will make you money. Very quickly you will run out of steam. List building for bloggers is a valuable activity to take part in and I even thought about running a list building blog but I quickly realised that as important as it may be I really can’t find something to say about it every day or even every week.  The 8 blogs I write in now all have a passion for me in this particular area so writing is never a problem – or at least if it is I can look around the net for inspiration on what to write about. This blog post is a classic example where reading Chris Brogan’s post inspired me to write this one.

When you are writing from your heart you have already given your blog a soul because your blog is a reflection of who you are and what you believe is important. That’s why I will always describe RSS blogs as life-less because for me they have no soul.

It has meant a shift in looking at my blogs and when the 10 30 method was introduced that shift took an even bigger meaning for me. Up until 10 30 (10 blogs earning $30 a day) I had set my intention to work on one blog only because Blog Success teaches authority blogging using one main blog. But the 10 30 method opened that up and allowed my creativity to flow back into blogging which has been fantastic because I have never been able to stick to one thing alone – way too creative!

So what has changed?

Well using Jack’s method you are encouraged to use domain names you already have or buy used domains that are already in the search engines.

During December I went through ALL of the domains I own (close to 90) and decided which 10 I wanted to use based on how many links they had going into them.

During 2007 there were a few domains I had been actively using and promoting so I settled on using them. Right now I have 8 blogs (one I am not sure about) and I am ready to work through this and just blog, blog, blog in 2010. The great thing with this method is it serves my need to have more than one thing going at once – I always get bored with just one blog.

Then I looked at the best way to build my list and decided that offering the same free product on as many blog as possible would be the best thing to do in terms of saving time and I only have one weekly newsletter I produce. Everything else is eCourses.

The domain is 5 years old but I was never sure of the focus. Now it will focus on supporting people to live their life free from fear and procrastination. It will focus on “discovering greatness” – which includes experiencing joy/happiness. All my keywords focus around personal growth.

The two products I promote belong to Guy Finley affiliate opportunity – commission ranges from $25-32 -  so selling one product a day will help me get close to and/or hit the $30 a day goal with this blog.

I originally had this domain and mindsetofablogger.com together (mindset was parked) so I unparked it and set it up with its own hosting. Now separate I am going to use this blog to focus on running a service based online business. I offer a number of services including freelance work, blog setup, mentoring  and all kinds of different sevices so this blog will focus on that. It will also focus on promoting how to run a service based online business for anyone interested.

It is strange but over the last 2 years all I have wanted to do is get rid of this part of my business but then I have realised it is a business all of its own. With the number of ghost writers, virtual assitants and other service based online businesses around it is worth holding on to this skill as I have been working freelance from home for the past 12 years.

So you get the picture! I have gone through and planned out exactly how I will make money from my online business in 2010. My other blogs are

http://www.howtobooklets.net – This blog is all about how to make your own information products and make money giving them away and/or how to make money selling information products.  I will build my list using the “how to infopreneur eCourse” and earn from selling Jimmy D Brown course on how to make a small fortune writing short reports – need to sell one a day

http://www.weightlossfooddiary.co.uk – promoting Diet Solution & Fat burning exercise - two products I am using now myself! No list. Need to sell one of each a day to make $30

http://www.mindsetofablogger.com – promoting Blog Success (recurring monthly commission) and building my list with the blogging bootcamp

http://www.datingadviceforwomen.net – the only site I have no real passion for so not sure how long it will last. Considering selling it.

The final site is a Ning social network for mothers looking to start an online business. I re-started it at Ning on January 1st 2010 (it had originally been running for two years before I closed it down) but now I have found out about SocialGo and may move it there. Still deciding. With SocialGo I get to charge a membership fee if I want to which provides future opportunities. It will be a social learning network – learning with a social aspect! I have made a commitment to blog once a day, possibly two if I can use an article or video and up to three times if I possibly can. All of it original content because I like to make life hard for myself

When all these sites produce the $30 a day income we are all looking for in Blog Success I have a potential income of  $210 a day (based on 7 sites because I don’t think the dating one will last long!) and $6,300 : this is mainly passive income and then I can add on top of that my service based business and any mentoring/training I decide to do.

Blog Success has definitely helped me to focus in on how to use the skills I already have and continue to build my blog business plus I have been experiencing that you really can make money blogging – whether that money comes in from getting a new client for your service based business or selling a product and receiving an affiliate commission as long as you have a plan and a structure to implement that plan you can make money blogging.

The frustrating part of it all is when I first joined them I took down quite a few of my blogs because the process was 1 blog as an authority – now here I am putting them back up again!

Future options : Once all the blogs are set up and making an income I can sell them for a profit.

Right now it doesn’t fit into my model of where I am going online but I can see there is potential.

John Haydon focuses on strategies for bloggers, small businesses and non profit. He has a great video on how to add a retweet link to your email campaign so your subscribers can retweet your opt in page via Twitter (Great idea – watch it here)

These are the people who will inspire me to become the Authority Blogger that I want to be. They have set a high standard and I will expect nothing less from myself than to match it as time goes by. I am a little sad there isn’t a black role model for me but maybe I haven’t found her or him yet

I like this point made by the just wondering department of techdirt

“The real question, from my standpoint, is whether or not the FTC is really needed here. If someone is constantly blogging positively about stuff they get for free, they put their own credibility at risk, as people realize that the products aren’t actually very good. It seems like the type of situation that sorts itself out. Those who are constantly pushing products for questionable reasons hurt themselves and soon no one trusts them. Does the FTC really need to be involved in that process?”

From reading all these articles (and I am not a legal expert so please do your own diligence – this is just my opinion ) – I have come to the opinion that the FTC rules only matter as a blogger if

• You review a product, say its great, but you don’t tell people you received a free copy of it.
• You review a product and you are paid to review it
• You make claims that you can’t substansiate (this product helps people lose 10 lbs in 3 days!) – of course if you have used it and can say it helped you that’s different

The good news is that all these internet marketing gurus blinding us with how many thousands people are making will have to stop and they will have to be honest about what people are really making, no more opening taps (fawcets) with money gushing out fasting than you can stop it! No more cash registers with dollar bills filing everywhere…. no more brief cases stuffed with cash while some poor man trys to hold on to it – all of which to convince you there is plenty of money to be made.

All there is to do now is tell the truth and the brutal truth when it comes to making money online is for every 100 people who buy a product only 5 will do something with it and 2 will experience financial succcess. Not great odds, but you might be one of the two of course!

For 2010 I have made the commitment to invest in a few things that will help me in my goal to increase my affiliate income, decrease my freelance hours and keep my mentoring time around the same (I only ever mentor 3 people a month max) and build my authority presence.

Here is what I have decided to invest in :

Adwords : Without a doubt I have come to realise that if I want to really push up my earnings – whether affiliate earnings or to sell information products – adwords is the way to go for faster results. So I am going to get the Perry Marshall Definitive Guide To Adwords. I have just been through his free 5 day adwords eCourse and I like his style, a very genuine guy.

Authority Building : I decided to invest in Rich Shefren’s Instant Expert course last week and became part of the Founders Club too, then two days later while reading his blog I noticed Chris Garrett (the Godfather of Authority blogging) also has an Authority training course that I would have definitely taken if I had to choose between the two and may still decide to invest in. Chris has a guarantee that says

“If you follow all the steps as detailed and are not satisfied for any reason, first I will work with you to put you on track…“

…… makes me want to mess up  just thinking about it

Affiliate Marketing : I am going to use Jack Humphrey’s 10 30 method of 10 blogs bringing in $30 a day via affiliate commissions to help pick up the pace on my affiliate marketing. I don’t feel as if I need training in affiliate marketing because I was a member of one site for most of this year and didn’t learn anything new that blogging and Blog Success hasn’t already taught me.  As with everything it is a case of being consistent, knowing who you are targetting,  having a plan and following the plan!

Premium Blog Posts : I am also going to intoduce a system of premium blog posts that will cover vision building and planning. Knowing what you want to achieve, setting goals so you consistently achieve them, planning and making sure that part of an online business is in place. All the great mindset stuff that is definitely needed but that people skip.   I know the only time my income suffers is when I am not focused on what I want to achieve and why.

One thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to teach people how to blog in masses because Blog Success does a great job of that and I would much rather promote their training.

Finishing and publishing my book and running offline events are two things that I am going to add and take a serious look at in 2010 because in 2009 I merely played with it and thought about it!

And I kick off 2010 in 2009 by attending  a teleseminar on December 17th with Brian Tracy called

“Reinvent Yourself and Thrive in 2010″

As well as the call I got access to a few of his other products which I haven’t listened to yet and I bought his audio course called “How to write a book” in which he said it took him 10 years to publish his first book so now I don’t feel so bad

“How I Made Over $1,500,000 Using A Free CSS Template“

Now a title like that can’t help but catch your eye and I went to have a look because I thought “poor love, he’s only gone and put one too many zeros in his title by mistake!“ 

Well I get there and it was actually written by a young man in his 20s by the name of Jonthan Volk - never heard of him before (although I have looked him up now and his “goal” post puts him in a great light for me)  but it seems he makes millions a year with affiliate marketing (note to self : get your teenagers into this game!)

His post got torn apart from all those waiting to be told, waiting for instructions, wanting something for nothing - they wanted him to explain in a post how he made 1.5 million. Have you heard of anything so crazy! Of course he didn’t, in fact he didn’t focus on any “How to” at all, which puts his post in the misleading category really – just missing off the word How would have helped a lot.

His post had more of a message to give and the message was “don’t sweat the small stuff!” – the template he used for making that much money was free. It is easy to waste time on the best templates and getting things perfect but that isn’t where you need to put your attention (remember this is about affiliate marketing now – us authority blogging wannabes still have to look professional!)

I remember having a business building strategy with someone who had spent 5 years being coached by a top internet marketer and he was still just “fiddling with his template!!!”  – it is easy to worry about the simple things but what really matters in all of this?

Well, what really matters is the following…. Are you giving your potential and current customers what they want? Are you solving their problem? Making their pain go away? Helping them through an issue? If you are, you too can make $1.5 million (looking forward to mine ) but if you are still waiting for your product or your blog to be perfect before you get it out there, or if you are spending more time on what graphic to use rather than on research and making sure you are giving people what they want then you are missing the point.

That (for me anyway) was the message that came out in Jon’s post, and for all those who wanted something for nothing. For the crowd of people all disappointed because they thought they were about to get a free lesson in how to do it – they were annoyed, confused and more than a little vocal about it.

I have met the something for nothing crowd – while I am not in the million a year category yet I definitely do alright online and thanks to that I get people emailing me

“I am a single mother too…. so you should help me….. free”

“I am black too…. so you should help me…. free”

“I am from England too….. so you should help me….. free”

“I am a women too… so you should help me…. free”

“I go to your church too…. so God wants you to help me….. free”

The something for nothing crowd are out there – they are alive and well and just waiting to pounce. I usually ignore the FREE part and reply

“Of course I would LOVE to help you….. vist this page and we can arrange to talk for 30 minutes…. I can definitely help you but go here to set it all up first. The url is www.mindsetofablogger.com/mentoring “

Of course when they get there I never hear from them again, because the something for nothing crowd don’t believe they have to invest in their learning to succeed. Its the internet and they have a right to get everything for nothing and if I tell you what I think of that I will have to say 200 hail marys!!!
